Along the scenic route of the Kleinrivier Mountains is a sought-after wine destination which offers unique craft beer, wine, gin and vodka tasting opportunities that will leave you wanting more. Whilst travelling down the R43 between Hermanus and Stanford, a taste of the good life will lead you down the path to a jewel hidden in the heart of the Cape-this is Misty Mountains Estate.

Bought and founded in 2004 for its fantastic water resources and vineyard potential, current owner, Andre van Vuuran, who resides in Johannesburg, fell in love with the idea of creating a place that would prove people wrong, a place that would naturally become a successful winery. But as soon as there winery was up and running, with approximately 38 000 vines planted the following year, things began to change.

“Misty Mountains Estate soon developed from a wine farm to a destination for both families and friends” claimed van Vuuran.

It was more than just a place to taste; it became a place for people to unwind, for families and friends to reunite and escape to an environment that allowed those, young and old, to experience something that they would never forget. A gift so unique, just one sip could transport them back to the place where it all began. A place that not only had the ability to form one of the first wine farms in the area, but its own craft distillery and brewery too.

Now, with a recently renovated cellar, tasting room and restaurant, supervised under current general manager, Robert Davis, an entirely new atmosphere has unearthed a story dying to be heard. Driven by pure passion and dedication, Davis managed to completely transform the interior to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the people using the space. What was once a place of formality; is now a place that strips everything down to expose what lies beneath. It now contains a raw, edgy style that plays with a sophisticated twist on a modern industrial design.

However, something so special is not supposed to be easy to find, in fact, it’s a place that seems to find you. As you drive along an everlasting road, a sign will reveal itself. It calls to you as you enter through the grey walled pearly gates. The mountains pull you in as you immerse yourself through a tunnel of luscious green vegetation that leads you to the 1000 square meter building.

The estate has a wall to wall entrance filled with sliding glass doors that when opened create a sense of being right in the heart of the vine- the birthplace for many of their products. Not many estates can recreate views of surrounding mountains, sea, and lagoon and have fast access to the Stanford River, Hermanus and Gaansbaai.

Open floor plans and rich raw textures are welcoming and consistent around the room. The smooth cement floors that contrast with the rough edges of the red face-bricked walls compliment the local art of Bastiaan van Stenis, whose work is scattered high and low. His art ignites conversations that echo around the room, allowing you to create your own visual interpretation of art that seems to tug at your mind.

Even the estates restaurant has fully immersed itself into a form of art and culture. Open seven days of the week for lunch, an Italian inspired artisan pizzeria will levitate you to the open planned cooking headquarters, situated at the back of the room. Here customers can experience an authentic guide to making the best rated Italian menu in town. Watch how the cook rolls out fresh pizza bases, smears on rich tomato sauce and sprinkles on real buffalo mozzarella and fresh toppings, before baking in a wood-fired, pizza oven.

“We can tell the story. I am telling you, nothing sells more than personal experience. We want people to see everything” says Davis.

Everyone deserves to have the opportunity to experience something unique, something different, something memorable that they can take with them for the rest of their lives. What better way to begin this journey by tasting the estates finest. Look out for Charlie Chaplin hidden on the other side of the carved out archway. Here an explosion of luminosity waits for you in the estates very own tasting room. Enjoy a modern eye-catching splash of pop art as your sense of sight; smell and savour explore the tastes of the estates luxuries.

Misty Mountains Estate produces products that are small in quantity but always deliver the best in quality. With three unique gins, beers, two ciders and four special wines to serve, it’s no wonder customers come running back for more.

“We are a boutique estate that produces world class products and services. We do not want to be the biggest but rather the BEST at what we do and deliver” claims van Vuuran.

The team prides itself on providing a first class hospitality experience for everyone who comes to visit and there online reviews consistently reflect this. The estate is open 7 days a week, including public holidays, from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
